Washington in 7 numbers
- Every major offense fell in 2025. Motor vehicle theft -40% (56,482 to 33,733), homicide -24%, burglary -22%, robbery -22%, larceny-theft -14%, aggravated assault -13%.
- Almost half of all reports are property crime. 310,925 of 574,471 reports (54.1%); larceny-theft alone is 177,969 (31.0%).
- Clearances skew toward violent crime. 68% of homicides cleared vs 5% of motor vehicle thefts and 14% of larcenies (2025, reports cleared divided by reports received, reporting agencies only).
- Homicides fell by nearly a fifth. 462 reports in 2025 vs 607 in 2024 (-24%) across reporting agencies.
- The biggest volume is not violent. Vandalism (81,685) alone outweighs the entire personal-safety total (40,317, 7.0% of reports).
- Watch the monthly shape. Larceny-theft peaked in May (16,105) and troughed in Feb (13,009), a 1.2× swing inside a single year.
- These are reporting-agency sums. 80 of 232 agencies reported motor vehicle theft in December 2025 (vs 88 in January); totals reflect who reported, not a census of crime.
Takeaways are computed from summed FBI CDE reported counts (source year 2025, 232 agencies in file). They describe reported data, not forecasts; check the methodology and coverage notes before reuse.
