Data, definitions and reuse
Violent: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault. Property: burglary, larceny, vehicle theft, arson. Monthly counts are summed over the agencies that reported each month, and agency coverage changes over time.

The United States in 7 numbers
- Every major offense fell in 2025. Motor vehicle theft -22% (2,328,099 to 1,813,270), robbery -19%, homicide -17%, burglary -16%, larceny-theft -9%, aggravated assault -8%.
- Almost half of all reports are property crime. 16,512,243 of 36,085,106 reports (45.8%); larceny-theft alone is 10,235,099 (28.4%).
- Clearances skew toward violent crime. 68% of homicides cleared vs 10% of motor vehicle thefts and 17% of burglaries (2025, reports cleared divided by reports received, reporting agencies only).
- Homicides fell by nearly a fifth. 41,268 reports in 2025 vs 50,020 in 2024 (-17%) across reporting agencies.
- Most reports are not violent. Property crime is 45.8% (16,512,243); personal-safety offenses are 8.6% (3,119,006) of all reports.
- Community-order volume dwarfs headlines. Simple assault (6,187,685) plus vandalism (3,816,141) together triple the personal-safety total.
- These are reporting-agency sums. 6,796 of 14,940 agencies reported motor vehicle theft in December 2025 (vs 7,083 in January); totals reflect who reported, not a census of crime.

Clearance counts are reports cleared divided by reports received in 2025 across reporting agencies; a clearance can relate to an earlier report, so this is a workload snapshot, not a solve-rate guarantee.
Nationwide sums add reported counts from agencies that reported each month (roughly 6,800 of 14,940 agencies; late months lag as submissions arrive). No per-100,000 rates are shown: no valid monthly denominator exists at aggregate grain. A hyphen (-) means not reported, not zero. Annual totals equal the sum of shown months within plus or minus 2% (see manifest).
